Hereford go on a try rampage at Walsall in Midlands One West

Walsall 10 pts Hereford 51.

HEREFORD went on a try-spree to record an excellent Midlands One West away win.

And all this after falling behind early on as Walsall’s heavier pack took advantage of having a string wind behind them in the early stages.

Paul Naylor gave Walsall the lead with an unconverted try in the early stages. But Hereford hit back with Jamie Bullock and Charlie Loughman paving the way for Dan Lewis to go over.

As half-time approached, Hereford went ahead with a penalty from Dean Powell who then kicked the conversion after playing a part, along with Sean Day, in a try for Loughman.

Three tries, one of them converted, in the first 10 minutes of the second period put Hereford firmly in charge.

Loughman collected a well-judged kick from Powell to score in the corner, then Tom Ewins broke through to score under the posts before Jonathan Smith received a pass from Powell to go over out wide. Although Walsall piled on the pressure for a short spell, Hereford resisted and hit back to score three further tries in the last quarter.

Richard Mayson, Smith and Brad Talbot all went over with Powell adding the extra points to two of them. A consolation push-over try for the home team in the final minutes could not take the gloss off an excellent win.

“This is a sound base to build on,” said coach Mark Harris. “But we have identified a number of weaknesses which, on another day, might have been exploited by the opposition.”
