Luctonians suffer first National Two North defeat at Caldy
4:00pm Wednesday 26th September 2012 in Sport
Caldy 23 pts Luctonians 10.
LUCTONIANS failed to take advantage of some good possession as they went down to their first National Two North defeat of the season.
Luctonians showed some flair in the first 10 minutes and line breaks by both winger Alex Rumsey and centre Geraint Langdon could have resulted in a score. But the Wirral-based hosts opened the scoring after 15 minutes when centre Dominic Kohler found space wide out and skated past the Luctonians defence to score under the posts giving an easy conversion for fly-half Richard Vassey. Four minutes later, some poor passing put the visitors under pressure and led to a second Caldy try when winger Matthew Van Sertima forced his way over a try under the posts for another Vassey conversion.
Luctonains pressed for a long period and were awarded five successive penalties during which Caldy’s flanker Adam Aigbokhae was yellow carded. But the Herefordshire side were thwarted in their efforts to cross the try-line. Luctonians used the benefit of the slight slope in the second-half to dominate the early exchanges and the visitors’ backs began to show their true potential. After a fine break by fly-half Andy Williams, a three-quarter movement saw winger Drew Cheshire cross in the corner only to have the try disallowed for a foot in touch. But, after the home side had taken 20 minutes to make their first visit into Luctonians territory, on 65 minutes a turnover in midfield allowed winger Charlie Meredith to score an unconverted try. However, Caldy replied almost immediately with two simple penalties by Vassey to move into a commanding position. With five minutes remaining, another three-quarter movement saw Cheshire squeeze over in the corner for a second unconverted try only for Caldy to have the last word when Luctonians again conceded a penalty in front of the posts to give Vassey another simple kick at goal.
On Saturday, Luctonians entertain Otley at Mortimer Park, kick-off 3pm.
