Worcester athlete takes top prize in Breinton road race

WORCESTER athlete Chris Wilson claimed the top prize when Wye Valley Runners organised their inaugural Breinton 10-Mile Road Race.

The race also saw the return of the Herefordshire 10-mile County Championships where Luke Mason, of Wye Valley Runners, and Sarah Holton, of Hereford Tri Club, claimed the men’s and ladies’ accolades.

Andy Chamberlain and Lea Wood donated new cups for the winning competitors.

The overall race, which was run in unusually warm conditions along a demanding undulating course with a few sharp climbs, was won in very convincing fashion by Wilson, of Worcester AC, in a superb time of 54 minutes eight seconds. Wilson finished almost four minutes ahead of Mason with Dave Long, of Royal Sutton Coldfield, in third place.

Unattached athlete Heather Graz secured victory in the overall ladies’ race in a time of 1.10.31 with Holton, of Hereford Tri Club, in second place, closely followed by the rapidly improving Rebecca Davies, of Wye Valley Runners.

Wye Valley Runners secured the men’s and ladies’ team awards. The winning men were Mason, John Pullen and Alan Lewis. Winning ladies were Davies, Becki Ansfield and Jan Edwards.

“The race attracted a good quality field from across the country with 78 of the 93 runners creditably completing the course in under 90 minutes which was a very good time considering the course and conditions,” said Wye Valley Runners’ Mike Shaw.

“Wye Valley Runners wish to thank all those that participated in this event and particularly the very many volunteers that gave freely of their time to help make a successful race.

“We also appreciate the patience and consideration shown by local motorists.”
