Two abandonments hinder Colwall hopes of avoiding Worcestershire League drop
5:00pm Wednesday 29th August 2012 in Sport
TWO weekend abandonments have left Colwall ’s hopes of avoiding the drop from Division One of the Worcestershire County League in tatters.
The Malvern Hills side must have fancied their chances of a morale-boosting win when they have fellow strugglers Coombs Wood in trouble at 111-6 only for rain to wash out play on Saturday.
And it was a similar story on Monday when they had only just begun their reply to Hagley’s 204 when the downpour began.
Colwall are now 33 points short of safety with only two games remaining.
Bromyard fared rather better and are up to fourth place in the table after a crushing 10-wicket success against Oldswinford.
Wormelow skipper Tim Boulter picked an excellent time to notch his first half-century of the season as the Kennel Field club gained an important success over promotion-chasing Burghill & Tillington.
With Aditya Saha following up his 38 with figures of 5-23, Wormelow moved clear of the relegation places after a 97-run success.
Third-placed Burghill remain in touch with the top two but were probably grateful that rain washed out Monday’s clash at second-placed Worcester Dominies who were 59-0 chasing just 121 for victory when the rain came.
Ross face a winnertakes- all battle at Avoncroft in Division Four on Saturday after an exciting draw with Bromsgrove 3rd on Saturday. The south Herefordshire club were five runs short of victory with three wickets in hand when time ran out in their run chase. They are now just a single point behind second-placed Avoncroft and travel in the knowledge that a win would secure promotion and, possibly, the Division Four title, too.
Canon Frome look set for a top-half finish in Division Five after a century from Andy Rogers (132) underpinned a 145-run success against Old Elizabethans 3rd.
