Wellington seek new boss after Derek Williams steps down

DEREK Williams has quit as Wellington’s manager on the eve of the new West Midlands League Premier Division campaign, writes Ian Morgan.

Williams was in charge of the villagers’ first team for five years and guided them to HFA County Challenge Cup success in 2009.

“I have had some great times,” said Williams.

“There’s no problem. Everyone is happy. I have stepped down but I am still helping.”

Three of Wellington’s leading players — Dale Withers, Wayne McNeil and Paul Jones — have left the club in the close-season.

Former Hereford United goalkeeper Marc Priday has stepped in to run the first team.

He will be helped by Nick Panniers and club captain Andy Price.

Wellington host Dudley Town in their opening league match on Saturday.

Club chairman Phil Smith paid tribute to Williams but said he was now looking for a long-term replacement.

“Derek has been running the first team for five years,”

said Smith.

“He’s done a good job on and off the field and he’s been a stalwart of the club.

“We have lost a couple of senior players and Derek felt he was starting to lose the dressing room.”

Smith added: “We now have to get someone in to run the first team.

“The West Midlands League is a big commitment and we are playing 50 games in 36 Saturdays.

“We have plenty of players, excellent facilities and the finances are fine.

“Marc Priday has stepped forward and Andy Price will help with the first two or three matches.

“But we are looking for someone who can manage the team in the long term.

Saul Thomas and Jim Watkins were on target in Wellington’s 2-2 friendly draw with Caerleon last weekend.
