Herefordshire bowlers hammered by Essex at Carterton

HEREFORDSHIRE suffered a heavy defeat when they won only one rink in a 148- 88 reverse in their annual match against Essex at Carterton.

Dave Holloway was in top form, skipping the successful rink to a narrow win with excellent support from Pat Ellis who had a fine match at third.

John Rosser played well at lead and was ablyl backed up by Jack Gray.

In a low-scoring game, Essex led 10-8 after 11 ends, but the Herefordshire rink won the next five ends to lead 16-10, and although Essex won four of the remaining five ends, Holloway’s rink held on to win 17-16.

Frank Garrett’s rink fought back from 21-10 down to win the three remaining ends, but it was not enough and they finished 21-17 down.

The rink skipped by Don Pugh lost by 26-17 and Russ Jones’ rink went down by 27-16.

John Colley's rink was down 26-3 after 16 ends and won all the remaining ends but they finally lost 26-9, while Colin Reading’s rink suffered the heaviest defeat, a 32-12 reverse.
