Former England player Tracey Powell retains Herefordshire singles title

BRIMFIELD had finalists in four of the five disciplines when Bowls Herefordshire’s ladies’ finals day was played out in sunny conditions at Weobley .

But it was mixed fortunes for the north Herefordshire club who enjoyed two successes and two runners-up spots.

Brimfield’s Jennie Cole had to give her best to Tracey Powell in the singles final with the Leominster and former England player retaining her title with a 21-15 success.

But there was always going to be a Brimfield winner in the two-wood singles where Helen Skinner enjoyed a 21-15 success over clubmate Marion Wheatley.

The only final not a feature a Brimfield representative was the pairs where Marcia Gwynne and Jenny Murray from Ross completed a 25-15 success against the Leominster duo Olive Goodwin and Thlema Watts.

In the triples, the Eastnor trio of Pat Yorke, Pat Hoffman and Val Pedlingham gained a 16-12 victory over Brimfield’s Marie Wall, Helen Skinner and Jennie Cole. The rinks produced the most thrilling finish of the day with an extra end required before the Brimfield quartet of Karen Tandler, Lynne Allen, Jill Bowen and Barbara Griffiths could complete a 20-19 win over the Leominster four of Val Lyons, Rita Wright, Lynda Smith and Tracey Powell.

All of the winners and runners-up now move on to Royal Leamington Spa for the national finals which begin on Saturday and continue until August 12.
