Hereford United legends set for an Edgar Street return
11:30am Thursday 19th July 2012 in Sport By Richard Prime
SOME of the big names of Hereford United ’s recent past will be gracing the Edgar Street turf again on Sunday.
A team of United ‘Legends’ will be turning out against a fans’ team as part of the Bulls’ Open Day.
And the event has turned into a major fundraising success with supporters paying just under £3,000 to take part in the fans’ team or to be on the substitutes’ bench for the legends.
Peter Heritage, scorer of the fastest ever goal at Edgar Street — 14 seconds against Lincoln City in 1991 — is making the journey up from Sussex to play.
He will be joined in the attack by his strike-partner that day 21 years ago, Simon Brain, who provided the through ball for Heritage to score in conditions reminiscent of most of this summer.
Steve Guinan, still an active Blue Square Bet Premier player with Kidderminster Harriers, and Evesham assistant boss Robin Elmes will be boosting the strike force.
One of the most successful central defensive pairings of United’s previous spell in non-league football, Tony James and Ian Wright, is to be reunited with some assistance from Gareth Davies and Matt Clarke.
And John Snape will be pulling the strings in midfield alongside Andy Ferrell.
The legends team will be managed by Bulls chairman David Keyte with former United chief Colin Addison in charge of the fans’ team.
Tickets for the game cost £5 but there are a limited number of VIP tickets which allow access to a meet-and-greet session in the Starlite Rooms and a buffet meal as well as a grandstand ticket. Contact the club on 0844 2761939 for details.
The open day begins at 10am and there will be a chance to watch the current United players training on the pitch from 11am.
The new home and away strips will also be on sale.
Meanwhile, the club would still be grateful for donations for the bottle, book and cake stalls which can be dropped in at the ground during office hours.
United’s final pre-season friendly has now been arranged and will be against Bristol City at Edgar Street on Friday, August 3, with a 7.30pm kick-off.
Young players are being invited to apply for trials with the Bulls’ under-14 squad. Email pa@herefordunited.
