Former Warwickshire duo key to Berkswell's Birmingham League win over Brockhampton
8:30am Thursday 14th June 2012 in Sport
BROCKHAMPTON’S unbeaten start in the Premier Division of the Birmingham League may have come to an end at Berkswell.
But it took two Warwickshire players — one past, one present — to interrupt their run of success.
Brockhampton won the toss and the decision to invite the home side to bat first seemed a good one with nine of their players failing to reach double figures.
The notable exceptions were opener Ian Westwood, the current Warwickshire opening bat and captain in 2009, and skipper Dominic Ostler, a member of the Bears’ treble-winning side of 1994.
Westwood, with 43, and Ostler, 38, accounted for more than 70 per cent of the home side’s runs as Dave Exall (4-34), Callum Stewart (2-21) and Owen Price (2-28) picked up wickets regularly.
Brockhampton, however, did not find runs any easier to come by although at 50-3 and with Henry Langford (26) and Chris Boroughs (16) at the crease, they were still in with a chance.
After this pair were parted, however, the remainder of the batting was swept aside by Babar Khan, whose remarkable figures of 5-4 from 8.3 overs saw the Herefordshire side dismissed for just 75.
It was an altogether happier afternoon for Eastnor, whose 87-run home win over Brewood has taken them to the top of Division Two.
After losing the toss and being inserted, Eastnor relied upon a fine innings from Faisal Khalid (63) to build their score.
Useful contributions from skipper Clive Chadhani (26), Jabran Khalid (18), Shahid Ahmed (18) and Atiq Ur Rehman lifted their total to 179-9 at the end of the allotted 55 overs.
Shahid, with an impressive 3-12 from 14.3 overs, and his opening bowling partner Mohammed Adeel (2-40) picked up wickets and applied the pressure from the start.
And with spin twins Atiq (3-18) and Jabran (2-21) running through the lower order, Eastnor were the victors in this clash with more than 11 overs to spare.
Brockhampton 2nd remain at the top of the Second Xl Division Two (South) after a win over Berkswell 2nd while surprise package Eastnor 2nd are now fourth in the table after a third straight success, this time at Stourbridge 2nd.
