Westfields anticipating Blackburn Rovers pre-season friendly
1:00pm Thursday 31st May 2012 in Sport
FULL-back Joel Edwards missed just three matches last season to head the Westfields appearance charts.
The former Hereford United defender turned out in 48 of the city club’s 51 matches in the Midland Alliance, the FA Cup, the FA Vase and the Herefordhire FA County Challenge Cup.
Defender Phil Glover matched Edwards’ overall number of appearances but four of his were from the substitutes’ bench, while Dan Price turned out on 46 occasions, five of which were as a substitute.
Matt Gwynne was involved in all 51 matches but was an unused substitute on several occasions.
Richard Kear maintained his good goalscoring record for the allpay.park club, finding the net on 22 occasions while it was a best-ever Midland Alliance season for Craig Jones who hit the target 20 times in his 40 appearances.
Westfields begin their new Midland Alliance season on August 4 and this is followed a week later by the start of their FA Cup commitments.
Before then, however, Fields have pulled off something of a coup by securing a pre-season friendly with one of the Premier League’s recently relegated clubs, Blackburn Rovers.
The Lancashire side will visit allpay.park on Wednesday, July 25 for a 7pm kick-off.
Former Westfields and Hereford United player Gary Bowyer, the son of ex-Bulls manager Ian Bowyer, is now a member of the coaching staff at Ewood Park.
“Blackburn are in the West Country on a pre-season training programme and have agreed to play us,” said Westfields’ chief executive Andy Morris. “Gary was impressed with the facilities at allpay.park and we are delighted to host Blackburn Rovers.”
The HFA Senior Invitation Cup final clash with Hereford United will take place on Tuesday, July 31 when the Bulls will be fielding their first team.
And Southern League club Bishop’s Cleeve will be the visitors for the Dennis Hartland Memorial Trophy clash.
