Brockhampton give Barnt Green a scare before rain intervenes

BROCKHAMPTON prepared for their Birmingham League Premier Division debut on Saturday by giving a mild scare to the reigning champions in the second round of the Graham Williamson Cup.

The villagers, who travel to Wolverhampton for their top-flight debut on Saturday, collected six Barnt Green wickets for just 107 before rain intervened.

Skipper Owen Price collected three wickets and Dave Exall, two, before rain brought a premature close.

On the opening Saturday of the Worcestershire League season, rain also played a major part with many games interrupted, curtailed or failing to start.

Colwall’s return to Division One was not a happy one as they were beaten by eight wickets by Worcester Nomads.

Only skipper James Abel (32) made a substantial contribution as Colwall were bowled out for 86 and Nomads eased home in just 23.5 overs.

Burghill & Tillington’s Kiwi duo Alex Hedges and Byron Newton were in the runs to ensure a winning start for the villagers at Rushwick in Division Two.

Hedges (87) and Newton (81 not out) starred in B&T’s 237-7 declared while Newton (3-25) then supported James Burston (5-30) as the hosts were dismissed for 98.

Five dropped catches cost Wormelow as they crashed by six wickets at Bewdley.

After being put in to bat, Wormelow had six players in double figures but no-one to go on to a big score as they were bowled out for 126.

Bewdley then benefited from Wormelow’s assistance in the field as they enjoyed a comfortable win.
