Hereford crash to National 3 Midlands home defeat against Malvern
3:00pm Wednesday 18th April 2012 in Sport
Hereford 3 pts Malvern 31.
THE loss of scrum-half Conor Sullivan to a harsh yellow card was unable to spoil a promising start by the relegated Wyesiders in their final National Three Midlands home clash.
Sullivan was carded after just four minutes but Hereford only conceded their first points after 20 minutes when Adam Dixon kicked the visitors into the lead.
Dean Powell almost immediately kicked an equalising penalty after Malvern were caught offside.
Dixon’s successful kick restored the Malvern lead but Kieram Hallam was only just unable to gather a kick-ahead and score as the home side continued to hold their own.
However, an ill-advised kick ahead by Hereford allowed Malvern to move the ball along their three-quartes for James Southall to score in the corner shortly before the interval.
Hereford enjoyed a good share of the play in the early stages of the second period before things went badly wrong in the final 20 minutes.
During this spell, two tries each were credited to Ieuan Mustow and Southall, who completed a hat-trick.
Hereford skipper Jamie Bullock was the Wyesiders’ man-of-the-match and received strong support in the forwards from James Parker, Toby Razvi and Dan Lewis while, in the backs, Josh Bell and Ben Osbourne showed up well.
Hereford Colts beat their Malvern counterparts by 14-0 in a warm-up match prior to the first-team game.
l MORE than 200 people turned out on Friday evening at Wyeside to celebrate the life of Councillor Dave Benjamin with a match which raised £260 for the Mayor’s charity.
Many of Benjamin’s old playing companions enjoyed a game which was won 16-5 by the Mayor’s Barbarians against Hereford veterans.
