BULLS manager Jamie Pitman has told fans he produced miracles to keep the club in the Football League last term.

Speaking at an often heated fans forum with new director of football, Gary Peters, Pitman was asked if he thought he should resign in the wake of a poor start to the season “No,” he replied.

“I produced miracles to keep this club up last season.

“You do not turn into a bad manager overnight.”

Pitman also spoke about the group of fans who gathered outside the players’ entrance following United’s recent 6-1 defeat by Gillingham.

“The police advised me not to come out, plus I had my wife and kids with me.”

Peters said he is under no illusions as to the difficulty of the task ahead but has reasons for optimism.

“I have seen glimpses that make me feel we can do well,” he said.

“I had eight hours of conversation with Jamie (Pitman) before I even sat down with the directors to talk about a contract.

“I’ve been in this situation three or four times before, usually with a good outcome.”

He admitted money was tight because of a large part of the budget being spent by former manager Simon Davey last term.

“Jamie has to look for a player on £300 to £400 a week and it’s not that easy.

“Some players here are on three or four times the amount of others.

“If Sean Canham (currently on loan at Bath City) was to go to another club full-time we could get three more players in.”

At times the Radford’s meeting became heated with one fan demanding to know why, when the side was leaking goals, Pitman refused to play former captain Janos Kovacs.

“In my opinion Kovacs is not good enough,” was Pitman’s reply.

There were many moments, however, which brought applause from the 100-plus crowd, particularly when Pitman refuted claims he doesn’t show enough passion.

“I care about this football club,” he said.

“I work my socks off and am often here 10 or 12 hours a day.

“My last thought at night is about football and my first thought in the morning is about football.”

HUISA chairman Keith Dodd, who chaired the meeting, said he thought the forum went very well.

“I was very impressed with Gary. His experience shone through and he didn’t duck or dive any question. I think the fans took to him immensely.

“I think Jamie, who received his own round of applause, will learn a lot from him and this experience.”
