PLAYING where there is no place to hide, the ‘keeper who cares will carry the crowd.

Edgar Street, Saturday, October 16, 2004, with Hereford and Woking tied 2-2 and 10 tense minutes to go.

United need a first win in four games to keep their Conference campaign alive.

Midfielder Craig Stanley crashes down just inside the Woking box.

Twelve yards away the linesman thrusts his flag across his chest Penalty - to all except an unsure referee who waves away protests to award a freekick.

Hereford’s keeper sees red at the man in black, racing the length of the pitch to remonstrate.

He comes away with a caution and one pitchside poet laureate - an unashamed ‘80s apologist - has a new muse.

“You are Gould.... always be leaving your goal...”

That run confirmed a cult status on loan star Jonathan Gould that the Hereford faithful had been thinking about since his debut penalty save against Farnborough Town a few Saturdays earlier.

Two more penalty saves in a mid-week LDV Vans Trophy first-round shoot-out with Scunthorpe United had already inspired song.

The man himself waxes lyrical about that close-run 2004-2005 conference campaign and the "great stuff"

United played.

Then 36, he had followed his dad Bobby - a bona-fide Bulls legend back in the 70s - to Edgar Street at the tail-end of a career that took him to the top with Celtic and Scotland.

On the line from New Zealand, where he is now assistant coach to A-league pacesetters Wellington Phoenix, Jonathan speaks of wanting to stay longer in a place that had “a proper football club feel to it.”

But NZ is home now, he headed there shortly after his spell with Hereford to spend four years coaching New Zealand Football Championship side Hawkes Bay United - with dad alongside - before switching to Phoenix last year as an assistant coach, gloves still on standby.
