A PAIR from Ross-on-Wye reached the semi-finals of the Bowls England National Championships.
Dan Palmer and Phil Middleton beat Berkshire (21-20), Cambridgeshire (25-9), Cornwall (19-16) and Norfolk (20-14) in a fantastic run, before falling to Lancashire with a 27-18 reverse.
The Hereford triple of Clive Allen, John Gladwin and Phil Williams came through a close game in the first round 16-14, before losing out to Kent in the second round.
Elsewhere , there was less success for county teams who failed to find their range at Worthing.
l Leominster sisters Lynda Smith and Tracey Powell led the county’s performers at the Women’s National Bowls Championships in Leamington Spa.
Smith and Powell represented Herefordshire in the pairs and reached the third round before bowing out 21-11 to Oxfordshire.
In the fours, Hereford quartet Gwyneth Thomas, Pat Turvey, Margaret Worth and Jan Williams also reached the third round before losing 24-19 to Huntingdonshire.
Joan Jones (Eastnor) and Jennie Cole (Brimfield) suffered second-round exits in the singles.
In the two-wood singles, Powell reached the second round before losing 16-13 and Karen Tandler (Brimfield) lost in the first round to the eventual runner-up.
Kate Williams and Carla Biddle (Ross) lost 17-14 to Oxfordshire in the preliminary round of the 25-and-under pairs’ championship.
Eastnor’s Toby Bennett and Val Pedlingham lost to Bedfordshire in the first round of the pairs.
Olive Rawlings, Cynthia Jones and Doreen Herbert (Hereford) crashed 15-14 in the first round of the triples while Rita Wright, Smith and Powell (Leominster) were pipped 15-13 by Bedfordshire in the second round.
Kingsland’s Joyce Morgan, Cynthia Bevan, Barbara Bengry and Ruth Millard lost in the first round of the fours.
