Herefordshire bowlers excel on men's and ladies' finals day

ENGLAND international Tracey Powell enjoyed a double success when Herefordshire County Women's Bowling Association held their finals day on a good green at Weobley Bowling Club.

Powell carried off the two-wood sigles with a 17-10 success against Karen Tandler.

And the Leominster player also teamed up with her sister Linda Smith to carry off the pairs with a 22-12 success against Val Pedlingham and Toby Bennett.

Powell, however, missed out on a threetime success when, in a thrilling encounter, her triple, which also included Smith and Rita Wright, were beaten by two shots by the Hereford trio of Doreen Herbert, Cynthia Jones and Olive Rawlings.

There was a close finish, too, in the rinks where another Hereford team, the quartet of Jan Williams, Margaret Worth, Pat Turvey and Gwyneth Thomas, were beaten by a single shot by the Kingsland four of Ruth Millard, Barbara Bengry, Cynthia Bevan and Joyce Morgan.

RESULTS Two-wood Singles: Tracy Powell (Leominster) beat Karen Tandler (Brimfield)17-10.

Singles: Joan Jones (Eastnor) beat Jenny Cole (Brimfield) 21-17.

Pairs: Tracy Powell and Linda Smith (Leominster) beat Val Pedlingham and Toby Bennett (Eastnor) 22-12 Triples: Doreen Herbert, Cynthia Jones and Olive Rawlings (Hereford) beat Tracy Powell, Linda Smith and Rita Wright (Leominster) 18-16.

Rinks: Jan Williams, Margaret Worth, Pat Turvey and Gwyneth Thomas (Hereford) beat Ruth Millard, Barbara Bengry, Cynthia Bevan and Joyce Morgan (Kingsland) 17-16 All the finalists now go on to respresent Herefordshire in the national finals at Leamington Spa next month.
