HEREFORDSHIRE visited Carterton for their annual match against Essex and were defeated by 151 shots to 90.

Essex had four winning rinks with the remaining two rinks finishing level on a green well prepared by the host club.

Ron Perry's rink had a very tight game against a strong Essex four and played very well to earn a well merited 17-17 draw. Perry was in top form and Glyn Lloyd gave him excellent support at third, while Bob Murdoch also played very well at second.

John Beavan at lead also had an excellent game and found the weight of the green to his satisfaction.

The rink skipped by Vince Ledbury also finished level at 18-18, with John Colley giving fine support at third, and Jimmy Lindsay and Pat Ellis also playing extremely well at the front.

There was never more than two shots between the rinks in a hard-fought game.

President Don Pugh's rink led 14-9 after14 ends, but won only one of the remaining ends to go down 22-15, and Russ Jones' rink also led 17-16 after 16 ends before losing the last five ends to finish 29-17 down.

Jim Farmer's rink had a bad start, losing 20 shots to four after eight ends, winning only seven ends in a 32-16 defeat, and the heaviest defeat was to Dave Holloway's rink who went down by 33-7, winning only five ends.

l BRIMFIELD & Little Hereford Ladies were in sparkling form to gain a narrow win, representing Herefordshire in the first inter-county round of THL National Top Club Competition.

Their opponents were Broadway representing Worcestershire and the match was played on neutral ground at Cheltenham.

Karen Tandler gave Brimfield a good start by winning her singles match 21-17 while, in the pairs, Josie Ward and Jennie Cole narrowly lost19-20.

In the triples, Helen Skinner, Josie Jordan and Marian Wheatley found themselves 5-17 down after 12 ends but fought back to win 19-17.

And an equally tense game of rinks saw Jill Turberfield, Dorothy Crew, Lynne Allen and Barbara Griffiths emerge as 17-16 winners.

Team captain Helen Skinner said: “This was a very tight match against strong opposition but everyone played well and we’re all delighted with the result.”
