Wellington 1 AFC Wulfrunians 0.
WELLINGTON produced their best display of the season to shoot down the table-toppers in the Premier Division of the West Midlands League.
Andy Price scored Wellington’s crucial goal after 67 minutes, while captain Dale Withers and goalkeeper Matt Eden also impressed.
Wayne McNeil was unlucky not to win a penalty for Wellington with 10 minutes left when he beat five players and then appeared to be fouled inside the box.
Wellington almost took an early lead when Withers headed Matt Williams’ corner to Craig Green whose close-range effort was hacked off the line.
Will Perkins rattled a posted with a 20th-minute free-kick and then McNeil jinked his way into the visitors’ box before firing wide.
Aaron Morris made a vital tackle shortly before the break but Wellington coped well with everything that leaders had thrown at them.
Wellington played even better in the second period and Aaron Morgan had a shot blocked before they made the vital breakthrough.
Perkins’ corner was volleyed into the box and Price knocked the ball past the visiting goalkeeper from eight yards out.
Williams beat the off-side trap but shot straight at the Wulfrunians goalkeeper and then Paul Jones had a powerful effort well saved.
Wellington were in outstanding form and deserved to overcome the challenge from the much-fancied visitors.
