In-form Jackson fires Westfields to victory

Westfields 1 Boldmere St Michael’s 0.

A 20-yard free-kick from in-form Scott Jackson fired Westfields to an impressive home win in the Aspire Midland Alliance.

Jackson bagged his fifth goal in five matches from a 70th-minute free-kick and he fully deserved the ‘man-of-the-match’ plaudits.

Jackson was also in superb form in the home defence alongside Tom Sparey as Westfields secured their fourth consecutive league success.

Jamie Edwards had a powerful left-foot drive brilliantly saved after three minutes and then Jamie Addis fired narrowly over the top.

Boldmere then hit back and Jamie Moore in the Westfields’ goal did well to hold an effort from Lyndon Weller and then Jason Holmes shot over.

Westfields started to take the initiative after the interval and Darryl Addis just failed to tuck away a right wing cross in the 54th minute.

Moore punched away an awkward right-wing cross and then Sparey got in a vital block tackle to deny Holmes.

Westfields scored the decisive goal with 20 minutes left after Boldmere keeper Sean Butler had been penalised for handling outside his penalty area.

Jackson blasted his free-kick through the Boldmere wall and into the net to give Westfields the advantage.

The hosts should have put the game beyond Boldmere five minutes later when Mark Davis’ shot was superbly saved by Butler.

Daryl Addis, who had set up Davis’ chance, then hit a shot on the turn which dipped narrowly over the crossbar.

Boldmere responded and could have equalised when Holmes fired wide from 10 yards out and he then blazed over with only Moore to beat.

Daryl Addis was denied in the dying minutes but Westfields held firm and maintained their bid for a top-six finish.
