Rugby fans all set for big derby

HEREFORDSHIRE’S rugby fans are gearing up for a derby clash at Luctonians’ Mortimer Park ground on Saturday, writes IAN MORGAN.

Luctonians host Hereford in the clubs’ second National 3 Midlands meeting of the campaign which kicks off at 3pm.

The north Herefordshire side recorded a 28-20 win over their city rivals in front of around 1,200 fans at Wyeside in February.

A late pushover try from Paul Hulland sealed Luctonians’ triumph in the first league meeting between the clubs since March 2002.

In-form Luctonians are sixth in the table and have won 13 and lost just two of their last 15 league matches. Hereford are eighth in the division and have won six and lost four of their last 10 games.

Luctonians’ spokesman Simon Green-Price is expecting a hard-fought derby played on good surface.

He urged all spectators to share transport to Kingsland where possible.

“We are gearing up for a large crowd in addition to 270 guests who will be sitting down to lunch in a marquee on the patio,” he said.

“There will be extra bar space provided by the cricket section in the new pavilion.”

Hereford’s director of coaching, Steve Bradley, is preparing his troops this week.

“Luctonians were very clinical when they came to Wyeside and stuck to their game plan. We have got to prepare for that during training.”

The rivals’ second teams are also meeting at Mortimer Park on Saturday, in the North Midlands Reserve League, kick-off at 1pm.
