GRAHAM Turner is expecting his tenure of office back in charge of Hereford United to be a short one.
The Bulls chairman, who has taken up the reins again after dismissing manager John Trewick on Monday, will shortly be beginning the task of finding a replacement.
Turner, who quit the manager’s role at the end of last season, had said he never expected to be in charge of playing matters at Edgar Street again.
But his temporary role, which he sees as ‘unlikely to be longer than this season and probably shorter’, could still be crucial in preserving United’s Football League status.
Trewick, the coach of United’s two promotion-winning sides, had been given the chance to manage the club at the end of last term.
But Hereford have failed to recover from their League 1 relegation as most had hoped. They have spent most of the season at the wrong end of the League 2 table.
Trewick, who had been at the club since the summer of 2004, was dismissed on Monday morning during the course of an ‘amicable’ meeting with Turner.
“I was given the reasons behind the decision which I understand and accept,” he said in a prepared statement, to which he declined to add.
“The most important thing to me is the continued Football League status of Hereford United. I have invested too much time at the club to see it jeopardised.
“I sincerely hope with Graham Turner taking over it instils the all-round belief that the club can finish in a more comfortable position.”
Turner confirmed that there had already been plenty of interest in the job. But ex-Aston Villa defender Shaun Teale, already very much an outside bet, has hardly assisted his chances by conducting his application for the job through the media.
Of more immediate concern to the United chief will be on-the-pitch activities.
“We have got to bolster the playing staff before the transfer deadline,” he said.
“I have already made lots of phone calls and I know that John had, too.”
There is also a ‘contractual dispute’ to sort out with Kenny Lunt, who was excluded from the side beaten by Macclesfield last Saturday.
It is believed that further appearances may trigger a clause in his contract which will entitle him to an offer of a further 12-month deal at Edgar Street.
Other players on the staff are also believed to have similar clauses in their contracts.
Lunt has, however, been ill in the early part of this week and not attended training, joining other casualties Lee Morris, Keith Lowe and Ryan Valentine.
Valentine, at least, is expected to be fit for tomorrow’s (Friday) trip to Lincoln while Mathieu Manset and Matt Done made cases for inclusion with goals for the Reserves in a 2-1 win over Coventry on Tuesday.
Supporters’ group HUISA are, meanwhile, calling for a big turnout for Tuesday’s home match with Morecambe.
“We are looking to fans to turn up in droves next Tuesday to help gain the points we need to secure our League status and financial future,” said chairman Keith Dodd, who backed Turner’s decision to take up the manager’s role again.
“When you have a man of his experience, we are too small a club not to utilise his knowledge.”
