McNeil goal no consolation for Wellington

Darlaston Town 3 Wellington 1.

WELLINGTON failed to produce their free-flowing football against a much-changed home side in the Premier Division of the West Midlands League.

The villagers struggled to break down Darlaston on a bumpy pitch and crashed to a disappointing defeat.

Wellington’s best chance in the first half fell to Paul Jones who rounded the home goalkeeper but his shot bobbled wide of a post.

Darlaston took the lead five minutes before the break when a central defender headed in a harshly-awarded free kick.

Wayne McNeil caused Darlaston problems in the second period but the home team doubled their lead after they broke away to win a penalty kick.

The lively McNeil reduced arrears after a neat ball from Mike Olive and then Andy Price headed over two free kicks as Wellington pressed for a leveller.

However, Darlaston clinched their win with five minutes remaining after a slip by Wellington goalkeeper Matt Eden.
