Hereford United manager John Trewick and chairman Graham Turner have paid tribute to Macclesfield Town manager Keith Alexander, who passed away on Tuesday night.

Turner told the club's official website that he received a phone call from Macclesfield chairman Mike Rance at 11.30am on Wednesday morning.

"His first sentence was that Keith had died, the rest of the conversation was a blur," said Turner.

"I can't remember what was said after that. The news totally shocked me.

"I've known Keith for a long time. We've obviously crossed swords in the past.

"I'd see him around at matches we'd both go to watch.

"He was a good supporter of the League Manager's Association and we'd share a drink and some banter there.

"He had the ability to keep things in perspective and smile.

"He was a fantastic fellow and obviously our condolences go out to his family and everyone at Macclesfield."

Trewick added: "He was a fine man, a football man and a real gentleman.

"When something happens as suddenly as that it makes everyone sit back and think."

A minute silence will be held at Edgar Street tomorrow before Hereford's League Two encounter against Macclesfield.
