BRAVERY and commitment sum up Hereford’s derby triumph at Whaddon Road on Tuesday.
United held out for more than 45 minutes with just 10 men after James McQuilkin was sent off for a second yellow card late in the first half.
Ryan Green scored the decisive goal midway through the first half to the delight of the 495 travelling fans.
Fine goalkeeping by skipper Adam Bartlett and hard work by all of his nine outfield team-mates earned Hereford only their second away win.
United will be aiming to follow it up with a League 2 victory against lowly Macclesfield at Edgar Street on Saturday.
Hereford hit the crucial goal against Cheltenham after 25 minutes.
Green rampaged forward and received a return pass from Kenny Lunt before drilling home a shot.
But four minutes before the break, Hereford suffered a major blow when McQuilkin was dismissed.
Hereford held firm after the break. Bartlett made excellent saves from substitutes Justin Richards and Elvis Hammond as the Bulls dug deep to shut out their hosts and pull further clear of trouble.
