Hereford racecourse's Katie Stephens says: Disappointment as bad weather intervenes again

EVERYONE was bitterly disappointed that we lost Sunday’s jumps fixture to ice and snow.

We were beaten by the elements despite the best efforts of the ground staff.

Fleeces had been laid to protect the ground from frost, and they had done their job but frozen snow on top of them defeated us.

Whereas we had hoped to be able to remove the covers in about three hours, it would have taken us eight or nine because of the weight of snow.

It was most frustrating, especially as a good day’s racing was in prospect.

Sunday’s fixture was the first time that we have ever deployed fleece covers across the entire racecourse, and trainers have been most supportive of the initiative.

However, onwards and upwards, we are now looking forward to hopefully kinder weather and our Valentine’s Day racing.

‘Romance at the Races’ on Sunday, February 14 promises to be an extra special occasion for ladies and gents with more than bets on their minds.

The telephone lines are getting busier every day as couples search out that uniquely romantic place to celebrate Valentine’s Day.

A romantic menu with local produce is being created by Executive Chef Jeff Wright in the racecourse’s Silks Restaurant.

The three-course silver service lunch will include several dishes for couples to share.

Diners in the restaurant enjoy a panoramic view across the racecourse, and the table is theirs for the whole afternoon.

Everyone who books an admission ticket in advance – and the easiest way to do so is online at www.hereford-racecourse.co.uk - will go into a draw to win a £500 Thomson holiday voucher.

Entrance gates will open on February 14 at 11.50am for a first race time of 1.50pm.

Grandstand admission is £18 (£17 when booked in advance), while accompanied children aged under 16 enter free of charge. Silks Restaurant is £56/61 per person.
