Floods wash-out Herefordshire rugby derby

FLOODING has washed out Hereford Rugby Club’s National 3 Midlands derby clash with county rivals Luctonians tomorrow (Saturday).

Hereford’s first-team pitch at Wyeside has been submerged after water spilled from the nearby River Wye.

Heavy rainfall has struck Herefordshire and the Wyeside pitch was underwater this week.

“The River Wye is expected to rise even further before the weekend,” said Hereford club secretary Frank Dullehan.

Hereford and Luctonians have met only twice in league competition - the last time was in March 2002.

The derby fixture will now be played at Wyeside, Hereford, on Saturday, January 2 with a 2.15pm start.

Meanwhile, holders Luctonians crashed out of the North Midlands Cup last Saturday after a 7-3 home defeat to lower-graded Bournville in the quarter-finals.

A dismal scene - Hereford RFC’s Wyeside ground was underwater on Tuesday with little prospect of improvement. A dismal scene - Hereford RFC’s Wyeside ground was underwater on Tuesday with little prospect of improvement.
