Brockhampton’s lead cut to ten points after draw

BROCKHAMPTON had their lead at the top of Division 2 of the Birmingham and District Premier League cut to 10 points after batting out for a losing draw at Tamworth.

They finished on 224-8 chasing Tamworth’s big total of 264-7, still 41 runs short of the win.

For once, the reliable seam attack of Chris Boroughs and Richard Parker failed to make any impression on the game and the bulk of the hard work was left to their spinners, Adam Hewlett and Owen Price.

The pair kept reasonable control of the run-rate, but struggled to take the key wickets of Jack Manuel (108) and Stuart Burrows (69).

Hewlett finished with 2-60 and Price, 2-64 with both of them bowling their maximum allotted 17 overs.

Boroughs may have had a quiet day in the field but certainly made amends with the bat.

He came in early on, following the quick dismissal of Ben Stebbings, and was still there at the close of the innings, just one short of his century.

Tom Austwick (35) helped Boroughs add 57 runs for the fourth wicket while Gareth Steptoe and Hewlett formed match-saving alliances towards the back-end of the innings.

In Division 3 Eastnor suffered a heavy nine-wicket defeat when they travelled to Warwickshire to take on Coleshill. The home side cantered home by nine wickets after bowling Eastnor out for just 52. With Newport winning on the day, Eastnor slip down to second from bottom in the table.

The Eastnor top-order batting was blown away after they had lost a crucial toss, with conditions in favour of the bowlers.

Their first six wickets crashed for just five runs to the bowling of Phil Trilloe (4-32) and Kevin Crotty (6-20).

Faisal (13) and Shahid (12) held Coleshill up for a while, putting on 22 for the seventh wicket.

The only other stand of note featured Jamie Onions (14) and Jim Sandford for the final wicket, with the former out in the 25th over.

The Coleshill openers took the score along to 38 before Carl Bland was caught by Jabran off the bowling of Atiq. This was the Herefordshire side’s only success, however, as Lee Craig (23) and Daminda Ranaweera (12) steered Coleshill home in the 16th over.
