Monmouth win to spring surprise on table-toppers

MONMOUTH pulled off the surprise of the day with a 23-run home win over previously unbeaten Droitwich Spa in Division 2 of the Crusader Worcestershire County League.

David Teague (63 not out) maintained his rich vein of form and helped the Welshmen to 205-8 at the Sports Ground.

Monmouth’s openers Dan Fisher (33) and Andy McGuire (33) had given the home side a good start and then Wayne Etheridge (40) weighed in.

Table-topping Droitwich suffered a couple of early setbacks, including the loss of former Colwall player Jerome Connor for nine.

Neil Davies (46) and Neil Wright (32) lifted Droitwich’s hopes before Paul Swingwood (3-31) and Fisher (2-9) combined. Droitwich were dismissed for 182 in 47 overs and suffered their first defeat of the season.

Wormelow have moved to the summit of Division 3 after an excellent three-wicket home win over Worcester Dominies in a top-of-the-table clash.

Captain Shaun Waldron was the Wormelow hero at Kennel Field, striking an unbeaten 99 to help his side overhaul the visitors’ 178 all out.

Waldron dominated the Wormelow innings with 17 fours and a six in his match-winning knock.

He eventually received support from Rob Gummer (21) and Wormelow knocked off the runs in the 47th over.

Earlier, Chris Powell had shone with the ball for Wormelow, bagging 4-21 from 14 overs.

Adam Crowle (54) and John Hancock (40) gave the Worcester side a decent start but Wormelow fought back.

Wormelow have leapfrogged their rivals to go top of the table.

The return of New Zealander Alex Hedges failed to spark Burghill & Tillington who crashed to a 118-run defeat at Stourport-on-Severn.

Hedges took 4-53 and John Terry, 3-52, but a powerful batting display lifted Stourport to 235-9.

Six Burghill batsmen reached double figures but the villagers’ innings subsided to 117 all-out in 40.2 overs.

Canon Frome won the Herefordshire derby in Division 4 South after a comfortable seven-wicket home triumph over Ross-on-Wye.

Veteran Ross opener Alan Marfell (74) provided the backbone of the south Herefordshire club’s disappointing 147 all-out in 44.2 overs.

Neil Andrews (3-15), Paul Andrews (2-17) and Louis Watkins (2-36) caused problems for the Ross batsmen.

Frome wasted little time at the crease and romped to an emphatic victory in the 26th over.

Alec Backhouse (40) and James Fortnam (17) got Frome off to a decent start before Andy Rogers (39 not out) and Paul Andrews (31 not out) sealed the win.

A superb all-round display from captain Mike King just failed to bring Colwall victory at third-placed Astwood Bank in Division 1.

King struck 84 in Colwall’s 230-9 and was backed up by Ed Smith who hit a lusty 41.

Bank’s reply was led by Andreij Jagielski who was brilliantly stumped by Ben Wheeler for 60.

With King bagging 4-67, Bank fell from 153-3 to 174-8 before eventually closing on 203-9. Colwall were one wicket short of victory.

Bromyard looked to be on course for victory in their match at Stourbridge when the rain intervened.

In reply to Stourbridge’s 231, Zahid Saeed (77 not out) and Ashley Bullock (74 not out) propelled Bromyard to 177-1 from 37 overs.

Earlier, Bromyard’s Sri Lankan leg-spinner Lakshan Rodrigo (6-74) took the plaudits, while Alex Bingham hit 95 for Stourbridge.
