Kington hold top spot despite Hay reverse

8:30am Friday 3rd July 2009

KINGTON held on to top spot despite losing to second-placed Hay in the latest round of matches in the Tarmac League.

Hay produced a solid result to win three rinks out of four against the league leaders but were grateful to take the match by just one shot after Ken Edwards' Kington four almost snatched the match with a runaway win on his rink by 28 shots to 12.

But Kington made amends a few days later when they visited St Martin's and won by 12 shots with D Bithell’s four leading the way with a 28-12 win for the visitors.

St Martin's disappointing season now sees them sink to seventh in the league as they have struggled to take advantage of their new green that provides a bowling surface amongst the best in the county.

Champions Leominster powered into third place in the league behind Kington and Hay with a convincing win at Hereford by 27 shots.

With their unbeaten record intact and with games in hand on both clubs above them in the league, their bid to hold on to the title is gathering a momentum that should see a further move up the table.

Ron Perry skipped the Leominster four that scored the day’s best win with a 35-5 win which was more than enough to secure the match result.

Hereford did pick up a rink win as John Wear’s rink won 26-17 to record only the third rink win this year against Leominster so denying them a maximum 16 match points.

At the other end of the table, Weobley played host to Wellington but finally lost by two shots and so remain at the foot of the table as Wellington ease up to sixth place, level on points with Hereford.

The clubs shared rink honours with two rink wins apiece as Ken Hancock skipped his Wellington rink to the day's best win with a 26-13 shot result.

Weobley’s husband-and-wife skips both won when Mansell Havard’s four won 22-11 and Brenda Havard’s four won 22–15.

However, the match slipped away from Weobley when Brian Evans' Wellington four obtained a somewhat fortunate win by two shots after Weobley suffered a 25% rink penalty for fielding an illegal four.

RESULTS: Hay on Wye 75 Kington 74(Home Rinks W3 D0 L1), Hereford 68 Leominster 95 (W1 D01 L3), Weobley 73 Wellington 75 (W2 D0 L2), St Martin's 70 Kington 82 (W2 D0 L2).
