Young athletes excel at county championships

ATHLETES from schools in the Hereford District excelled at the Hereford and Worcester County Championships.

The sprinters were in fine form, especially Sam Griffiths (John Kyrle) who won the Inter Girls 100m in an impressive 12.3 sec.

Olivia Wilding won the Inter Girls hurdles with ease, (12.5 sec), then chased Sam down in the 100m for silver.

Hereford Sixth Form College sprinters Sarah Weaver and Alex Homden were untroubled by the opposition, easily winning their respective 100m races, while Nick Deiwiks (Hereford Cathedral School) was second over 200m.

Over the longer distances, HCS team mates Ed Fletcher (54.0sec) and Flick Hunter-Choat (68.6sec) produced solid runs, winning bronze medals in respectable times, while Mehan from John Kyrle reduced his pb by nearly three seconds to 57.9sec to win a bronze medal in the hotly-contested Inter Boys 400m.

Over 800m, Mitchel Henchoz (HCS) produced a gutsy performance, reducing his pb to 2min 26 when finishing third.

Mary Macleod (Bishop's) achieved a similar feat in a classy Inter Girls race, winning a bronze medal in 2min 26 sec.

Aaron Godfrey (Bishop's) was not quite so lucky in the Inter Boys race and, despite running 2 min 15, missed a medal by a mere second.

Vanessa Brann won the senior girls 1500m (5min 04) by a country mile as did Clara Evans in the Inter Girls 3000m (11min18), with Naomi Prosser (Fairfield) third in 11min 59.

HCS team-mates Olivia Lord and Daisy Gibson battled for bronze in the Inter 1500m, with Olivia holding off Daisy's fast finish to win by a tenth of a second in 5min 48.

The Knight brothers (Bishop's) dominated the Inter Boys 3000m with Ryan just holding off Jordan to win in 11min 18.

Jon Barnes (HSFC) added a bronze in the senior 3000m (10min 45) to the gold won in the pole vault (2m 80).

In the field there were many excellent performances, although Stephanie McNally's putt of 11.13 in the Inter Girls' shot was outstanding.

This was followed with a bronze in the discus with a throw of 23m 34, a feat matched by Josh Wildig (St Mary's) in the Inter Boy's shot (11m 59). Jade Newman (HCS) easily won the senior shot with a putt of 9.09 m as did hammer throwers Sophia Day (HSFC) and Hannah Barnes (Kingstone) in their respective age groups.

Katie Nicholas (Whitecross) was Hereford's sole javelin medalist, taking silver with 21m 15.

Hereford athletes took gold in both of the junior discus categories. Anthony Cheung (John Kyrle) realised his potential, winning the boys' with a throw of 29m 54 and Bishop's C Griffiths won the girls' with 21m.6. Michael Poolton (HCS) just did enough to secure bronze in the Inter Boys discus with 28m 29.

In the long-jump pit, Stefan Cunningham (Aylestone) produced a lifetime best of 5m 39 to take silver in the junior long jump.

Dan Moorley (St Mary's) fourth in the long jump, did enough to clinch silver in the triple jump with a jump of 10m 91.

Ali Raine (John Kyrle) was quietly delighted with her victory in the Inter Girls Triple Jump, winning on count-back, as two girls jumped 9m 97.

Sarah Jones (HCS) added bronze in the Inter Long Jump to the gold won in the pole vault (2m 60).

Harriet Jones (HCS) jumped consistently to 1m 40 to take bronze in the Junior Girls high jump, while Hereford Academy's sixth-formers Dagnus Burka and Chris Meredith won their first medals, silver and bronze respectively in the Senior Boys high jump.
