BROADHEATH Common provided an excellent venue for the Wales & Borders Harness Racing's Presteigne meeting with a large crowd shouting home their favourites.

In the Grade B final Wayne Knox had to choose between his two heat drives of Maple Star or Ayr Force One.

His son Joseph picked up the spare drive on the big grey Ayr Force One who is improving week on week and responding to the diverse training that owner Trina Haslam from Llanybydder gives him.

This honest horse passed the winning post in the fastest time of the day with the super reliable Scoot 66 (Bevan Llanddewi) in second and Forgeside Jack (Walker Gwernogle) in third.

The Grade A final was an emotional race for the commentator Neil Edmunds as he watched his nephew Mark White steer Mahogany Duke to victory, his voice rising to a crescendo when they crossed the line in front of Ithon Ace (Williams Shrewsbury) with Obi-Wan-Kenobi (Williams Llanafan) in third.

In the consolation, Andrew Bevan from Builth sent youngster Scarlet Lady into the lead and, despite the efforts of Grade A horses Fold Flight (Perks Presteigne) and Master Tom (Owens Shobdon), he could not be denied so he ended the day on a high.

This week Old Radnor hold their meeting at the Evenjobb track, tomorrow (Friday), first race 4pm.
