HEREFORDSHIRE Badminton Academy (HBA) ran a successful national under-19 tournament.

The event took place at both Hereford Cathedral School and The Hereford Academy, with county star Brandon Adams teaming up with Worcestershire's Matthew Bickerton to win gold in the men's doubles.

All of the winners were presented with medals, as well as t-shirts donated by Hereford Industrial Supplies, which said, 'I smashed in Hereford 2018'

All money raised will go towards keeping badminton free for primary aged children in Herefordshire, enabling HBA to junior county teams that can compete against the best in the country.

"This was our biggest entry to date, proving Herefordshire is getting a great reputation for hosting badminton and developing players," said HBA chairman Rachel McGill.

"We want badminton to be available to all children in Herefordshire and have started by making our Sunday sessions free to any child at primary school.

"We’re also able to support primary schools to set up their own badminton clubs and have a course running in May to help teachers coach badminton to GCSE standard in Herefordshire schools."

Adams, who is aged 16, also recently took part in the Under-19 English National Championships in Milton Keynes.

Only the top 64 players in the country can enter the event and Adams played very well, only losing a close quarter-final match 21-19, 21-18.

Meanwhile, the Key Stage 4 girls' badminton team at Weobley High School beat Hereford Cathedral School to become the County Winter Games champions.

"Thanks to all the hard work and practice that the girls have put in over the past three months they deserved the victory," said PE teacher Holly Ghent.

In total, Weobley claimed three gold and two silver medals from the five events they entered.
