ROSS-ON-WYE Golf Club won the Gloucestershire County Gross Team Championship for the first time in 20 years.

Pat Watkins, Hannah Whibley, Kerry Welding and Helen Palmer had a gross score of 249, which tied them for first place with Bristol & Clifton.

But Ross took the championship on the fourth card.

Whibley has dominated recent competitions, winning the Mary Beavis Cup, with gross scores of 85 and 86, as well as clinching the Ladies County Mercia Castle stableford contest.

In the latter, she scored 37, narrowly beating ex-president Di Honey, who was second with 36.

Whibley now goes on to the county competition along with fellow Silver Division player Ruth Pimlow, while Honey and Fiona Lucas advance from the Bronze Division.

Meanwhile, in the Nett Team Championship at Naunton Downs, the Ross team of Ruth Kirchmeier, Sally Fycun, Phoebe Barber and Erika Atkins missed out to the home team for second place only on countback after both teams scored 228.
