COLWALL chairman Kim Berry is not pressing the panic button and is confident his team can kick-start their Worcestershire County League Division One campaign.

The Stowe Lane outfit are bottom of the division after five games having finished runners-up last season.

"Because we're one of the prominent clubs in the county, people maybe surprised that we're bottom, but we're certainly not panicking," said Berry.

"We are quite an exciting team with some great prospects, but we could do with a bit more maturity.

"We lost Tom Coleman, who was the top run scorer and second best wicket taker last season, as well as our overseas player Wehan Joubert, who was the top wicket taker.

"It is challenging, but we've got a good set of lads and we have been close in a few games."

Colwall have finally welcomed a new overseas star though in the shape of West Indian spin bowler Ancil Nedd.

Berry said Colwall were let down by a couple of other people, hence why Nedd has only just come on board.

"He's a useful addition because we've been lacking a bit of spin, so he brings a bit of balance to the team," said Berry.

"He's a very nice young man and hopefully he will give us the boost we need."

Berry has taken over the chairmanship duties this season following a long connection with the club.

"My brother is president and my dad was chairman so upon retirement, I decided I wanted to put something back in the club," said Berry.

"There are good people working for the club and it has a great junior section.

"The seconds also won at the weekend and the thirds are top of their league, but people do tend to focus on the first team."

Last Saturday, Colwall lost by five wickets to rivals Eastnor.

Early batting failures once again proved costly, with Colwall reeling at 27-3.

Ferguson Cameron held out stubbornly until he was leg-before to Raheel Lone with the score on 51, while skipper Ben Wheeler threatened a revival with some positive batting before offering a return catch to Tariq Jamil having reached 44.

Only a belated flurry of boundaries from Henry Coleman (23) and new overseas player Ancil Nedd (20 no) took the final total to 155-9.

Nedd, who is from the West Indies, also took two wickets, but fine batting from Waqas Ahmed (56) and Mohammed Hasnain (40) took the game away from Colwall.

The win maintains Eastnor's strong start to the season as they look to bounce straight back to the Birmingham & District League.
