DIRECTOR of rugby Alex Davidson was made redundant at Luctonians, the Hereford Times can confirm.

The paper reported last week that Davidson was stepping down from his role at Mortimer Park after rejoining the club in 2010.

"I was invited to a management review and I was told that my position was at risk of redundancy," said Davidson, whose employment will end on May 1.

"There was then a consultancy period, but it was obvious I would be made redundant by the language used.

"I was invited to apply to be lead coach, but the financial value was much lower.

"So I told the club I wouldn't be applying for it and I was made redundant.

"I was surprised because I was already planning pre-season friendlies.

"I may have to step away from rugby now and try something else.

"But I've still got a massive passion for it, so if something came along that interested me, then I would consider it."

Luctonians chairman Simon Whiteman confirmed that the position of director of rugby was no longer required at the club and Ryan Watkins, who has been serving the club as backs coach, will take on the role of head coach, as well as continuing his existing coaching role at Worcester Warriors.

The administrative side would be led by Anika Brown, who will become club secretary.

On the field, Luctonians will face Scunthorpe this Saturday in their penultimate game of the season at Mortimer Park.
