A WIMBORNE Town coach has particular reason to be excited about this Saturday’s game against Hereford FC.

John Macey was in goal for Newport County against Hereford United in the 1972/73 season when as record league attendance of 14,849 crammed into Edgar Street.

Macey is now at Wimborne, who will be looking to cause an upset against the Southern League Division One South & West leaders.

“I played with Ronnie Radford at Newport and was with Colin Addison when he was manager,” said Macey.

“I will be returning to Edgar Street for the first time and it’s nice to see what has been achieved there.

“I have always been involved in football and Matt Holmes, who is the manager at Wimborne now, asked if I wanted to stay on for this year.”

Wimborne gave Hereford a real test when the two sides met last October, with the Bulls prevailing 3-2. The Dorset based club are 11th in the division and Macey believes his side can go toe-to-toe with Pete Beadle’s side again this weekend.

“We do try and play football and it won’t be any different on Saturday,” said Macey.

Mike McGrath is again suspended for the game, while Joel Edwards could again be rested.
