POLICE are investigating an alleged assault that occurred during a Wellington match last Saturday.

Matt Williams sustained lumps to the top of his head and considerable swelling in an altercation that happened during the second half of the West Midlands (Regional) League Premier Division match against Wellington Amateurs.

The away side – who were already reduced to nine men – had two players sent off, while Aaron Morgan was dismissed for Wellington.

“I’m appalled by what happened and there is no excuse for it,” said Wellington Amateurs chairman Dave Gregory.

“I have rung up and apologised to their chairman and hope we can move forward and regain a good relationship.

“I have been connected with our club for 57 years and never come across anything like it.”

Wellington chairman Phil Smith says it’s the ‘ugly side of football’ that no-one wants to see.

“Nobody goes out to play football to come home with a black eye,” he said.

Wellington won 9-0 thanks to a hat-trick from Josh Hunt, two goals each for Adam Newbury and Paul Jones and one apiece for Will Perkins and Morgan.

Witnesses are asked to call 101, quoting 0720S of January 7.
