KEVIN Green went one better than last year when he won Leominster Rankin Club Golf Society’s 22nd annual open stableford for the Mathew Finney Memorial Cup.

The eight-handicapper, who was runner-up in 2015, recorded 35 points to claim the trophy at Leominster GC course when drizzling rain fell on most of the 36 competitors.

He pipped both Ed Jones (handicap 13) and Kevin Gibbons (4) by one shot.

Jones was runner-up on countback and also won the trophy for the day’s best left-hander, while Gibbons had the consolation of claiming the best gross trophy with a score of 76 and also won the longest drive and the award for nearest the pin with a second shot to the 18th.

The other nearest the pin award on the sixth hole was scored by Nick Palmer who went on to share the prize for the most points on par threes with Malcolm Clarke and Dave O’Dowd.
