HEREFORD Volleyball Club's Ladies team has almost certainly secured promotion following a convincing victory over the University of Birmingham.

The city side, playing at Whitecross High School, went to the top of the West Midlands League Division Two.

Hereford controlled the first set, winning comfortably 25-20. It was a different story in the second set, however, as Birmingham, who started the day as league leaders, raced into an 18-13 lead.

However, Kamila Astley inspired a great comeback which saw the city side level things up at 19-19 before winning the set 25-21.

The final set saw Hereford re-create their first set form, winning 25-17 thanks to a great all-round team performance. Zaneta Matuszewska was named most valuable player for her work as a setter.

At the end of this month, the side travels to Tamworth Spartans for a quarter-final cup clash.

Meanwhile, Hereford Men's team were also convincing winners, beating South Birmingham. The win pushes them up to second in West Midlands League Division Three, meaning the side is on course to achieve its goal of promotion to Division Two.

Coach Krzysztof Gwizdziel said he is proud of the way things have gone, particularly as the club only formed just over a year ago.

"I remember we had just 12 players then," he said.

"We joined the league in September 2015. Now we have around 25 regular players. Our club has 50-60 members."

He said there are also 20 juniors who attend training sessions.

"We are working hard to reach more juniors in Hereford. I can see that volleyball is a growing sport in our town."

He said free taster sessions take place at Whitecross School between 4pm-5pm each Sunday.
