WESTFIELDS missed the opportunity to move up the Midland League Premier Division table after slipping to a 1-0 home defeat by Stourport Swifts.

A bumper crowd of 212 fans couldn't spur the home side on to victory, with the Worcestershire side securing the double over Westfields.

The only goal of the game came during Stourport's first attack when Joe Philips was allowed too much time and he fired low past John Hopkins.

Westfields fought back well though and Jamie Cuss had a good chance to equalise but was thwarted by the Stourport keeper who saved well from close-range.

Both Sam Gwynne and James Baldwin also did well down the flanks but their crosses were not converted.

At the other end, Stourport twice got through on goal but Hopkins held on to two shots as the visitors went in 1-0 up at the interval.

After the break, Westfields stepped up their game and Craig Jones fired wide before Cuss went close with a header.

Stourport should have done better with a great chance after catching Westfields on the counter-attack, but they wasted the opportunity by hitting the ball high over the bar.

Late on, Westfields saw appeals for a penalty turned down when Cuss was brought down by Paul Hurrell who was red-carded but the ref gave a free-kick on the edge of the penalty area. From it, Craig Jones’ free kick was smashed into the Stourport wall.

A late surge saw Westfields throw men forward but the visitors' defence held firm.
