FORMER Hereford United player Tyler Weir has been banned from football for two months by the sport’s governing body after failing to declare he had been approached over match fixing.

Weir, who made seven appearances for Hereford United between 2009 and 2012, was charged with not immediately reporting to the Football Association after being contacted by a third party related to “seeking to influence the outcome or conduct of a match or competition”.

The FA have stressed Weir was not involved in any attempt to fix matches and did not accept money or gifts.

But the 25-year-old has been immediately banned for two months after admitting to two breaches.

He also got an extra four months, which are suspended until July 1, 2018.

On November 20, 2012, the date of City’s 3-3 draw at Guiseley AFC, and on November 24, 2013, it was alleged Weir failed to immediately report to the association any offer made to him or any participant of any bribe, gift or reward or consideration of any nature, or any other incident, fact, or matter, which was related in any way to seeking to influence the outcome or conduct of a match or competition.

The Ledbury-based player’s former Hereford United team-mate Delroy Facey was jailed for two-and-a-half years in April 2015 after he was convicted of being part of an international match-fixing ring.

It was reported at the time Facey texted Weir to see if his team-mates would be interested in earning £2,000 in time for Christmas 2013. Weir declined to take part in the plan and no football matches were successfully fixed by the gang.

A spokesman for City said Weir and the club accepted the punishment and would not be appealing.

“Worcester City FC acted in a professional manner when immediately bringing this to the attention of the relevant football authorities and the player and the club fully assisted the FA with their subsequent investigation,” he said.

“We must however stress that the club considers the player has done very little wrong.

“The club will therefore support the player through his punishment and help him back into the squad at the end of his two-month suspension period.

“The club will be making no further comment on this matter.”

The FA Regulatory Commission’s decision took place last Thursday and saw Zephaniah Thomas, of Mickleover Sports, and Scott Spencer, of Hyde United, also hit with bans after admitting one breach each.

An FA spokesman said: “Three non-league footballers have been given suspensions from all football and football activity after they admitted breaching FA rules.”

Weir has made 23 appearances this season for the National League North club but did not feature in Worcester’s victory over North Ferriby on Saturday.
