THOUSANDS of pounds were once again for Westfields Football Club at their annual sportsman's dinner.

Ex-Liverpool and England defender Phil Thompson was the latest star to speak at the Three Counties Hotel, with comedian John Stiles, son of World Cup winner Nobby Stiles, providing the entertainment.

Thompson, who joked about his satnav initially taking him to Belmont Road, Hay-on-Wye, talked fondly about his time at Anfield and shared stories about playing under Bill Shankley and Bob Paisley.

Stiles meanwhile donated two sporting items for the auction that followed afterwards, with a rare montage of his father with Bobby Charlton going for £1,000.

Other prizes snapped up included a photo of boxer Manny Pacquiao going for £240, a round of golf for four people at the Forest of Arden Championship course being bought for £220 and two grandstand seats for Manchester United's derby game against Manchester City at Old Trafford being bid for £200.

A Liverpool shirt signed by Phil Thompson was bought for £175.

"It's our biggest fundraiser of the year and we've been doing it for 28 years," said Westfields chief executive Andy Morris.

"In 1987, the late Emlyn Hughes and Gareth Edwards were our guests and they started what was to be a superb night out for friends, sponsors, supporters and companies to support Westfields FC.

"These dinners have proved to be the backbone of our fundraising and the support people have shown with our grand raffle and auction is invaluable to the running of the club.

"It plays a big part in supplying all of our teams, from under-fives to the first team.

"Our ground at allpay.park is one of the top non-league grounds in the midlands and our facilities for players, supporters and sponsors are superb and have been paid for by the funds raised by the committee, of which the dinner has been a major part."
