LUCTONIANS captain Dan Smith says his team should not fear going to National League Two (North) leaders Sedgley Park this weekend after claiming their first win of the season last weekend.

After losing their opening three games of the season, Lucs knew they had to beat Huddersfield to kick-start their season.

And after rolling in four tries to earn the maximum five points on offer, the Mortimer Park side are confident they can give their Manchester opponents a game on Saturday.

“They have bolstered their squad quite a bit in the summer, so it’s going to be a tough one,” said Smith.

“It’s always a tough place to go. It’s almost the complete opposite to here in that it’s a very quite quiet place to go.

“They’ve got big runners and it's quite an intimidating place, but we know what we’ve got to do and just try and play rugby.

“It’s almost like the mentality we had last year when we travelled to places like Ampthill when we threw the ball around and tried to score four tries.

“Hopefully the result comes from there afterwards.”

Luctonians director of rugby Alex Davidson added that his side will have to be positive to match the division's early pacesetters Sedgeley Park.

“They are getting results, but are not steam-rolling anyone, so on the basis that we’re much improved and we know where to put it right again, we will try and go again,” said Davidson.

“It’s a shot to nothing and we’ve just got to go there and be positive.”

Smith was one of four players who scored tries against Huddersfield to record a comfortable 29-13 win.

“It was much needed with the three losses to start with,” said Smith.

“We came into the game knowing that nothing other than a win would do.

“The weather held out and it was a big turnout of 600 too 700-odd people so it all worked out.

“We almost feel invincible here, it really is a great atmosphere and even when we play away, you don’t go anywhere like this and it really is one of a kind in the league, so it does make a huge difference.

“We had been working all week in getting our backs firing and going out wide earlier because the last few games, we focused more on our forwards because it had been working with driving the balls. But we knew we had to mix our game up a bit and it worked out.

“There were a few mistakes early on which gave them a few early penalties, but after we had sorted out our discipline, we didn’t give away any silly penalties and our backs were firing.

“We had the one little ill-discipline, but compared to last week, our discipline was much better and we kept players on the pitch.”

“Everyone was firing and it does make a huge difference having them there.

"It’s been our best week training and it showed on the pitch.”
