WESTFIELDS captain Jamie Cuss says his team are not panicking, despite only winning one league match this season.

The Hereford side languish in 19th place in the Midland Football League Premier Division — just one spot above the dropzone.

But Cuss believes things will get better, especially if Westfields win their games in hand.

“There is no panic button because we know it will come together,” said Cuss.

“We haven’t had a great start, but if we start winning a few games then we will get right up the table.

“We have only played eight games and I know we are a good side.

“We usually pick up after Christmas, so if we are in the mix in around fourth or fifth and not too many points behind the leaders, then we will take that.”

Cuss scored for Westfields on Tuesday night in a 1-1 draw at Coleshill Town.

“We played well and had chances to win it, but so did they,” said Cuss.

“We didn’t play at their ground because they are having a 3G pitch fitted and it was hard to play football.

“Getting a draw is a small step, though.

“We just need to keep together and keep fighting because we are not a bad side.”

Cuss has now scored nine goals in his last four games and the skipper said he is enjoying playing in a more advanced role.

“It’s nothing compared to what John Mills is getting for Hereford, but I’m enjoying it,” said Cuss.

Coleshill opened the scoring in the 27th minute through Mykel Beckley Mykle Beklie before Cuss levelled on the stroke off half time after being set up by Ekene Amadi. Cuss and Aidan Thomas both had chances for Westfields in the second half, while Kane Kahaki saw a goal ruled out after Thomas’s cross was deemed to have gone out of play.

Coleshill also had chances to win it, but Westfields goalkeeper John Pugh and the defenders, especially Jay Saunston, were outstanding and both sides had to settled for a point.

Westfields went into the game after a 2-1 defeat at Quorn last Saturday.

Phil Glover scored Westfields’ solitary goal, with Will Richards and Callum Thompson netting for the Leicestershire side.

Westfields host Midland Football League Division One side Littleton this Saturday in the second qualifying round of the FA Vase.

Barwell knocked Westfields out of the FA Cup at the first qualifying round stage after Pugh was harshly sent off for handling the ball outside his area.

But prior to that, Sean Edwards’ side memorably came from 4-0 down to beat Kidsgrove Athletic 6-5 and last week they thrashed Fownhope 11-0 in the HFA County Challenge Cup.

“It’s about getting continuity in the team and finding players that gel,” added Cuss.

“We’ve just got to go out there and enjoy our football playing against a team that are a league below us.”

“But It would be nice if we had a run in the Vase because it is about confidence building.”
