A STRONG contingent of Hereford players helped the Heart of England Petanque Association enjoy unprecedented success in the inter-regional championships at Hayling Island.

The quartet of Steve and Carol Bradley, Pete Allen and Andy Preece were part of an eight-strong team, managed by local lady Melanie Williams, which finished top of Division Two in the main event to secure promotion back to the top flight following a two year absence.

Bill Wood, Ian Williams, Steve and Jordan De Burgo played their part in ensuring Heart of England claimed the runners-up spot in Division Two of the four-team Challenge event which means the region will compete in Division One for the first time next year.

Meanwhile, promising youngsters Katie and Rachel Powell were part of a four-strong team which finished third in the Junior event behind Kent and Chiltern regions.

The pair play for the Sundowners in the First Division of the Marches League.

Delighted Heart of England president Barry Cox said: "It was the best ever result for the region with every player earning a medal.

"Earning promotion to the top flight again was a great achievement and reward for a wonderful team spirit, I was so proud of everyone."

Petanque is open to anyone aged eight to 80.
