THE largest autograss event in the country will be staged in Herefordshire this weekend.

A total of 400 competitors, including a number form the county, will be taking part in the 2015 Autograss Championships at Thinghill Court in Withington.

There will be 10 classes, with 40 drivers in each one, with trophies handed out to the winners.

Each league being represented at the event were assigned a set number of cars in each class to represent them in Championships, with qualifying rounds being held for their members to determine who shall qualify to race this weekend.

One of the participants is Lance Bowen, from Eardisland, who has helped organise the event with the West Midland Autograss League.

"It is a standard single event and is the biggest event in the year," said Bowen.

"There be between 5,000 to 6,000 people there so it is quite a large event.

"There will be three qualifying heats to get to the eight finalists, with the finals being held on Sunday afternoon."

Bowen has been competing in autograss since he was 14 and finished second in his class last year.

He said he is hoping to be within a shout of a trophy again.

"We are quite lucky in that there are 10 classes and we had three winners from our league last year and a few second-placed finishes," said Bowen.

Fellow organiser Simon Bentley said Thinghill Court is the ideal setting to have the race.

"The West Midland League held it there in 2010 and it was also there when it was organised by another organisation in 2013," said Bentley.

"It is a really good track and has a good lay-out for both drivers and spectators to enjoy."

The first race will be at 9.30am on Saturday, with heats and finals taking place throughout the two days.
