AUSTRALIAN cricketer Danny Irvine believes Brockhampton can now kick on after helping them to a crushing nine-wicket win against fellow strugglers Wolverhampton in the Premier Division of the Birmingham & District Premier Cricket League.

Opening batsman Irving once again showed his prowess by scoring another half-century for the villagers to take his run tally to 346 from nine games.

"We've had a pretty tough run over the last four weeks, so to come out and have a really strong wind against a pretty good team should give us a lot of confidence and hopefully we can keep progressing," said Irvine.

"Our opening bowlers probably set up the day for us.

"Chris Boroughs played fantastically with the new ball and bowled 13 overs straight.

"Him and Macca (Jamie McIllroy), who has probably struggled a bit this year coming off a pretty good season last year, also bowled outstandingly.

"Those guys set up the day for us and made it a bit easier for us batters to come on a pretty good wicket."

Irvine arrived at Brockhampton from Sussex side East Grinstead but is a former South Australian age-group player who a number of games in the West End Grade Competition for Glenelg Cricket Club.

Irvine, who hails from Adelaide, said he is enjoying life at Brockhampton.

"It's been fantastic, it's a pretty small club compared to what I'm used to, but the boys are pretty close and we've got a good skipper and some really good people involved with the club," said Irvine, who added that he is looking forward to the upcoming Ashes series between England and Australia and predicts that the Aussies will win 3-0 or 4-0.

"That has made it pretty easy for me to come across and I've fitted in quite well."

Brockhampton captain Boroughs said he has been delighted with how quickly Irvine has settled in the team.

"Danny has come in and done really well and batted well again," said Boroughs.

"Hopefully he can continue there and look to get some bigger scores, but we've had good parts and everyone in the team has contributed at some point , but maybe we've haven't contributed enough collectively as much as we should have done and that is why we haven't had the success."

Following last Saturday's win, Boroughs is confident that Brockhampton can now rise up the table.

"I think if we play our cricket we're good enough to beat most if not all of the sides in the league, it's just little things that haven't been going for us," said Boroughs.

"We just need to make sure that we work hard so they go for us over the next few weeks.

"If that happens then we can move up the table a little bit.

"We've had a couple of close games, but the one positive we can take out of the games we have lost is that we've picked up some good bonus points which shows we've been taking wickets and scoring runs.

"We definitely believe that we're better than where the league table shows that we are at the moment.

"We're one game away from the halfway point in the season, so we need to make sure that we're working hard to get up to mid-table, but if we can do that over the next five to six weeks then we can reassess later on.

"It's just important that we get a couple of wins under our belts."

After electing to field after winning the toss, Brockhampton made an electric start by snapping up two early wicket.

Matthew Kleinveldt went after being caught by Ian Bullock off Jamie McIllroy's delivery before Boroughs snapped up Thomas Fell's wicket following a catch by Jack Aldous-Fountain to leave Wolverhampton on 8-2.

Boroughs then grabbed his second wicket by dismissing Alexander Grant before Aldous-Fountain ran out Adam Lawley.

Wolverhampton did then manage to steady the ship but two quick wickets by Nick Powell meant the visitors were 78-6.

Adam Quinley was the next to go when Boroughs got his hat-trick of wickets, with Powell and McIlroy sharing the last three wickets to bowl Wolverhampton out for 123.

Fine batting by Irving and Henry Langford meant that Brockhampton never looked in trouble and they raced to 50 before Langford was caught by Grant off Jack Snape.

But Boroughs came in and helped the home side to get the required runs and complete an emphatic win.

This Saturday, Brockhampton face reigning champions West Bromwich Dartmouth.
