A COUNTY squash player gained his first England caps by representing his country in an international masters tournament in Dublin.

Tom Burton, first team captain at Hereford Whitecross Club, was competing in the over 55 category.

England beat Ireland in the opening match, with Burton showing no signs of any nerves in a convincing 9-0, 9-1, 9-5 win against Irish captain Michael Conlon.

The second match saw him up against Charlie Graddon of Wales.

Burton once again impressed, winning the match 9-3, 9-2, 9-3, which helped England to a 5-0 success.

England then faced Scotland in the final, with the Scots having won their first two matches.

The match was a keenly contested affair, but England once again dominated, coming out 5-0 winners to secure the Edinburgh Quaich trophy.

Representing England was a life-time ambition of Burton ever since he stated playing squash more than 30 years ago.

The former Pegasus Junior footballer was previously selected as a reserve team member, but did not get the call up to play.
