ROSS Golf Club men's captain Neil Lancett could not have wished for a better start to his 'A' team's 2015 campaign.

After being promoted to Division 2 of the North Gloucestershire Foursomes League, the side faced Stinchcombe Hill Golf Club in their opening fixture.

Even when the six foursomes matches came to their respective conclusions, there was no clear indication of an upset.

The state of play showed that the Ross team were a point down and were largely off the pace in the last three matches still on the course.

But with considerable swings in fortunes in those final three matches, in which 2.5 points were gained, this meant that the Ross squad could return home triumphant with a 4-2 away victory.

James Morgan and Dave Gardner went out first and were one down with two to play.

But they both won 17 and 18 to win one-up.

Jason Bolton and Tim Wyatt gained a half in the second game, playing against former Ross Scratch Cup winner Tom Workman and his partner.

Niall Powell and Harry Butler went out third and were the only losers, going down two and one.

Fourth out were Dave Barnard and Matt Humphries and were one down with three to play.

But they won at the 16th and 17th holes to again win one up.

Club vice-captain Warren Moore and 15-year-old Brad Knapper went out next, with Brad able to repeat the fine form he showed in a pre-season friendly.

The pair comfortably won 3&2.

Steve Wallbank and Dave Daniels found themselves two down with two holes to play.

Believing the match was in a halved state and knowing the team needed their extra half point to win the match overall, they won both the 17th and 18th holes to put the icing on the Ross cake.

The result brought personal satisfaction not just for the team and Lancett, who was non-playing captain, but also to head professional Tim Hall and his THSG team where the indoor performance lab facilities have provided valued coaching sessions throughout the winter.

In other matches, club captain Clive Whitson edged into second place in the annual fixture against his club vice-captain Warren Moore's team.

With 11 pairs a side playing four matches, Whitson was able to avod having his legs waxed.

A total of £244 was raised for the captain's charity.
