HEREFORDSHIRE trainer Michael Scudamore had a successful day at Aintree this afternoon as his horse Monbeg Dude came third at the Crabbie's Grand National.

The charge, who is part-owned by England rugby union World Cup winner Mike Tindall, married to the Queen's granddaughter Zara Phillips, was a 40/1 shot.

He was ridden by Liam Treadwell, who memorably won the Grand National aboard Venetia Williams' Mon Mome, a rank 100/1 outsider, in 2009.

Scudamore, who trains his horses at his Eccleshall Court stables in Bromsash, near Ross-on-Wye, is the grandfather of the late Michael Scudamore Snr, who won the Grand National board Oxo in 1959.

He said he was very proud of Monbeg Dude.

"We're only a small team and he's won the Welsh National and been third here," said Scudamore.

"It just means an awful lot to be lucky enough to have one like him.

"He's been a great flag-bearer."

His brother Tom Scudamore also rode this year's race, finishing ninth aboard Soll.

"I had a great ride for a long way, but he stopped pretty quickly after the third-last,"he said.

"I wouldn't say he didn't stay, but perhaps the issues he's had in the past caught up with him today. He jumped from fence to fence and gave me a hell of a thrill."

There was disappointment for county jockey Richard Johnson though, who fell at the eighth fence aboard Balthazar King.

The horsre was treated by vets before taken to the University of Liverpool Equine Hospital for further assessment.

The race was won by 25/1 shot Many Clouds, resulting in jockey Leighton Aspell winning the National for the second successive year.

Champion jockey AP McCoy bowed out by finishing fifith on favourite Shutthefrontdoor.
